In Reading, we will be taking our DRA reading assessments to find our reading growth. We will be taking the NWEA district test again to see how much we've grown. We will also be working on asking and answering questions with Nonfiction, and finding the Main Idea and Details in Nonfiction.
In Writing, we are starting a research-based informational piece on mammals.
In Social Studies, we are going to start learning about economy.
Our next Tiger Pride will be December 14th, and our Winter Parties will be the last day of the school year, December 21st.

Your student should have come home with a note showing when I have your conference time recorded. Please let me know if any thing has changed and you need to schedule another time.
Don't forget, Fall break starts next Friday! No school from November 1st-November 7th.
Thank you so much for your help with the fall party last week! The kids had so much fun.
We are ending our first quarter and I am impressed at how much your students are growing and learning. It's great to see them so excited for school everyday. Thank you for instilling a love for learning in them at home.
Next quarter we will be tackling subtraction within 100, reading and writing nonfiction, and taking a look at cultures and economy.
PS. For Halloween week, we could use 3 small boxes of toothpicks and 2 boxes of cheap cotton swabs for a Science activity. If you are able to donate, let me know :)

This week, your student's DRA reading score is coming home, along with their first NWEA score. We talked about the Reading data on the NWEA score, and made goals for becoming better readers. If you need help finding books that interest your child, these two sites are great resources:
Paper grade cards reporting Math, Reading, and Writing will be shown at conference time. If you have any questions before then, please let me know!
PS: Just a reminder that we have snack time in the morning!
PPS: We could use some extra highlighters for Reading and Writing :)
Spirit Week Reminders:
Onesie Wednesday! (PJs)
Tacky Tourist Thursday!
Willard Pride Friday!
For the Homecoming Parade, we will be walking students to a designated spot on the parade route and walking back after the parade. If you choose to watch with your child and take them home, you will need to watch from our designated spot and check them out from the office afterward.
Also, the district has decided to postpone introducing the EMPOWER grading program, and to use alternate grade reporting for this quarter. I will be showing a paper grade card at conference time and will be able to further explain our new grading system.
Here's an example of what a Target Level 3 would look like for first quarter reading:
This target will guide our focus in Reading Instruction. Receiving a 3 as a grade will show the reader can do these things, a 2 will show they can do most, a 1 will show that they still need help.
Let me know if you have questions!
We are all settled in to Second Grade and are finding out what we need to work on to be successful this year! We are rating our learning with Proficiency Scales. Ask your student what they know about Proficiency Scales, or check out this link: https://www.willardschools.net/Page/2040
